Thailand backpacking route
Feel free to change this route based on your preferences, but here’s a good starting point for a two week Thailand backpacking route.
6 days in Bangkok
We are starting our trip in Thailand from Bangkok because it’s one of those cities easily accessible from all around the world. You can also start this trip from many other places and we have for example guides of how to get to the Full Moon Party from Phuket and Chiang Mai. We recommend 6 days in Bangkok because there are more than enough things to see. Routing around temples, the grand palace and floating markets will make your trip unforgettable. The internet is full of guides to make interesting Bangkok holiday or to take day trips from the city.
Alternative: You could also split this up to 3 days at the beginning of your trip and 3 days at the end of your trip.
Bangkok is also one of the biggest cities in Thailand with easy access to Koh Phangan and the Full Moon Party. Read our article on how to get from Bangkok to Koh Phangan for more information.
4 days in Koh Phangan
Most hotels, hostels, and resorts require you to stay at least 3 days during the full moon. Therefore, 4 days in Koh Phangan is just perfect. The Full Moon Party is, of course, the most popular event on the island but in fact, you can take part to several different parties before and after the main event. If partying isn’t your thing, go for an exotic jungle hike, relax on the paradise beaches, or try extreme sports.
4 days in Koh Samui
The pier in Koh Samui is only a short ferry ride away from Koh Phangan. This island is also growing holiday destination with a lot of history, unique nature, and beach resorts. You could easily spend here more than 4 days. Don’t skip things like Ang Thong Marine Park, Big Buddha, and Wat Plai Laem. After your two weeks trip, it’s easy to return home or continue your holiday to other destinations in Asia from the airport in Koh Samui.
Alternative: Visit Koh Tao and go scuba diving. If you’re not certified, 4 days in Koh Tao is the perfect amount of time to get your PADI Open Water certification.
