What is the Full Moon Party?
The Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan has grown to fame over recent years by being the first of its type. The all-night beach party draws crowds from all over the world that want to experience the night long party and the beautiful sunrise on Haad Rin beach. Taking place on (or as close as possible to) the full moon every month, this phenomenon kicked off in 1985 where around 20-30 travelers gathered together outside the Paradise Bungalows.
Now, the event attracts between 5,000-30,000 revelers every month where the bars stay open all night and electronic music pump out of the speakers until dawn. For many, it is now an integral part of traveling through Southeast Asia, so here are a few tips for this unmissable event.
Where to stay?
Although staying as close to Haad Rin beach as possible is often the most popular choice on the island of Koh Phangan, it isn’t always possible to get into a hostel on the island. Not only do they book up about a week in advance but most hostels also require you to book for three nights or more over the party period. Fortunately, there are other options available, and these include staying on Koh Samui which is located only 8km away over a stretch of the Gulf of Thailand.
This does, however, present you with another question – how to get to Koh Phangan? Travel is actually relatively speedy considering you are located on a completely separate island. Travel between Koh Samui and Koh Phangan can take anywhere between 10 and 50 minutes depending on the mode of travel. Ferries run the day before and after and are an exceedingly popular way to travel to the party, so make sure to book in advance. If you want the freedom to come and go as you please then speedboats are available through the night though these are considerably more expensive and can be overcrowded. Speedboats are not always the safest form of travel, so use your discretion.

Getting Ready for the Party
So what’s the best plan of action to get you through the Full Moon Party? Don’t arrive too early! Most people arrive at about 22:00, and it’s when the party really gets going. If you’re struggling, you can take a break at one of the restaurants located a block back from the beachfront that stay open all night. Stock up on glow sticks and luminous body paint and head out to Haad Rin.
Just make sure you drink plenty of water, and you know you’ll enjoy the party. With 12 sound systems showcasing upcoming talent from around the world, this 800m stretch of beach transforms into something special on the night of the Full Moon Party.
